If you’re turning 65 or already on Medicare, you’ve probably discovered that it’s not as simple as people say. There are Parts A, B, C, and D… plus Medicare Advantage, Medigap (Medicare Supplements), and a whole lot of fine print.
I’m Stan the Insurance Man, and I help seniors, retirees, and caregivers navigate the Medicare maze with clear, personalized guidance—so you can make the best decision for your health, your wallet, and your peace of mind.

What Is Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older.
It also covers some younger individuals with disabilities or certain health conditions.
Medicare is divided into four main parts:

Part A – Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and some home health care.
Usually free if you’ve worked and paid into Social Security for 10+ years.

Part B – Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.
You pay a monthly premium for Part B.

Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps pay for prescription medications. Plans are offered by private companies and vary by region and medication needs.
✅ You must enroll separately to avoid late penalties.

Part C – Medicare Advantage Plans

These are all-in-one plans offered by private insurers that bundle Part A, B, and usually D, along with extras like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits.
May have lower upfront costs, but limited networks.

What Medicare Doesn’t Cover (And Why You May Consider a Supplement)

Medicare covers a lot, but it doesn’t cover everything. You’re still responsible for:
Deductibles
Copayments
Coinsurance
Excess charges
Prescription costs (if no Part D)
Long-term care
Foreign travel emergency coverage
This is where Medicare Supplement Insurance (also called Medigap) steps in.

What Are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement Insurance helps fill in the gaps left by Original Medicare. These plans are sold by private insurers and are designed to reduce your out-of-pocket costs, like copays, coinsurance, and hospital expenses.
Several standardized plans are available (Plan G, N, etc.), each offering different levels of coverage. The right one depends on your health, budget, and travel habits.

Benefits of Medicare Supplement Plans:

See any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare
No referrals needed for specialists
Predictable out-of-pocket costs
Great for frequent travelers and snowbirds
Guaranteed renewable (your coverage can’t be dropped if you pay premiums)
